Royal Meteorological Chronicle: Gothic Mountain Stillness

The mercury within my barometer has grown strangely motionless, resting at 29.87 inches as though the very breath of the Carpathians has been arrested. Such steady pressure, observed since yesterday's dusk, betrays a profound atmospheric inertia—a hush that precedes either revelation or ruin. The thermometer, too, clings to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Celsius, 8 Reaumur), while the dew point at 39 degrees speaks of a humidity that saturates the air without yet condensing into rain. Through the north-east windows, a partly sunny sky—53 per cent obscured by listless clouds—casts a pewter light upon the valley, and a light mountain mist coils among the pines like the exhaled breath of dormant giants.

Wind from the north-east barely stirs the anemometer, a mere two knots of calm air that fails to disperse the vapours. One might fancy the mountains themselves are holding counsel, for the last quarter moon remains invisible, swallowed by the day's pale fire. The barometric steadiness, far from reassuring, hints at a stagnation of the lower atmosphere—a condition historically followed by sudden squalls or creeping fogs that swallow travellers without warning. My hair-hygrometer confirms the moisture: the strands have lengthened by a fraction since dawn, though the air remains cool and the mist light.

Let the solitary wanderer take heed: such stillness is not peace but a pause. The mercury's immobility and the wind's dormancy whisper of unseen pressures shifting beyond the ridge. Should the barometer fall ere nightfall, expect the mist to thicken into a blinding shroud, and the calm to break with Carpathian fury. Until then, the Gothic Mountain Stillness reigns—beautiful, ominous, and absolute.
